It is 6am and I was unable to sleep much (3 hours… awesome) so I decided to get an early start on the news and notes.

First I wanted to give a few notes from the Baseball America chat on yesterdays release of the Reds Top 10 Prospects.

  • Kyle Lotzkar had TJ Surgery and may be back mid season 2010.
  • The Reds like Mesoraco more than those outside of the organization.
  • Cozart has better range/less arm than Paul Janish. Much better bat.
  • Juan Duran needs consistent playing time, but injuries have kept him from getting it so far.

Every year for Christmas I buy myself, or add it to a list for someone else to buy for me the Baseball America Prospect Handbook. Its well worth the money. It doesn’t come out until late January this year (most years is been the same), but you can get it now. You get reports on the Reds Top 30 prospects as well as 870 more reports on the other organizations Top 30 guys.

Corey Brinn has up some photos from the Reds Dominican Academy over at his website. Go check it out.

John Fay has a post up with David Bell’s take on Yonder Alonso. Bell managed Alonso in AA and is also managing him out in the Arizona Fall League.

Alonso’s bat will get him to the big leagues, but Bell’s been particularly impressed with the strides Alonso made elsewhere.

“The other parts of his game have really improved,” Bell said. “He’s made improvements in all parts of the game. It’s been great for him to get the experience out here. He’s playing better defense, his base-running is better. To me, those are last pieces to getting ready. He’s getting closer and closer.”

Alonoso is going to play Winter Ball in Puerto Rico after the AFL finishes up.

Hopefully Alonso gets plenty of time in Puerto Rico as well, it will be good for him to make up the time he missed with the injury.

I have added up all of the votes for the Fan Top 10’s, which will be coming out on Friday, but a little preview is here today.  Sixteen players received votes inside a Top 10. Only four players showed up on every ballot. Four players, not the same four, received at least one #1 vote.
