Today kicks off the winter meetings in Indianapolis. I thought about making the trip up there just to take in a day, but decided to stay home. It is REALLY cold out, didn’t want to risk the car not making the full trip. The Reds have been rumored to be interested in several guys and to be interested in moving several guys. At the very least by weeks end we will see the Rule V draft go down, I will be surprised if a Red isn’t involved in one way or another.

John Fay has several interesting little tidbits up on his blog. First was this one from Mario Soto on Enerio Del Rosario:

“He used to be an over-the-top guy,” Soto said. “Now, he throws sidearm. His ball has so much movement that all they do is hit groundballs to the infield.”

Rosario had a groundball rate that was in the upper 60% area last season. That is better than Brandon Webb. He may not strike a lot of guys out, but he should be solid as long as he continues to limit the free passes.

John Fay also talked with Brian Price who had a chance to see Mike Leake out in Arizona. Here is what Price had to say about Leake.

“As much as people talk about command, he’s got good stuff,” Leake said. “He’s got plenty of velocity. He’s got movement and deception. He’s got two good breaking balls. He’s a great athlete on the mound. He’s got great intangibles. That’s probably the most important thing – his feel for pitching, his feel for hitters. He was very impressive.”

Word from Redsfest was that Leake was going to begin in AA in the 2010 season.

John Fay also talked with Justin Lehr and Chris Heisey. You should really check out his blog just about every day.

Mark Sheldon wrote an article on the system continuing to contribute over at Reds.com.

CHONE came out with offensive projections last week, but this weekend saw the defensive projections come out. The system uses the TotalZone system that you can find on MinorLeagueSplits.com, so the defensive projections are more accurate than the offensive projections for guys with limited to no MLB time. Here are the projections of what the prospects would do:

  • Chris Heisey – +3
  • Zack Cozart – +2
  • Todd Frazier (OF) – +1
  • Yonder Alonso – +1
  • Danny Dorn – -2
  • Sean Henry – -2
  • Juan Francisco (3B) – -7
  • Chris Valaika (SS) – -18
