This spot is usually filled by the ‘Team Progress Reports” but I decided to skip it and pick it back up next week to give the rookie teams something to get a roll with.

Baseball America is saying that the Reds are in on LHP Angel Mejias from Venezuela (subscriber link). Frankie Piliere has him as the 4th best prospects out of Venezuela this year. Piliere says his fastball is up to 90 MPH and that he is 6’3″ tall. Sounds like some solid projection in there still. He would be a nice grab for the Reds.

The Future’s Game rosters are out and the Reds do not have anyone representing the US in this years game, but have two guys on the World squad. Yonder Alonso (Cuba) and Philippe Valiquette (Canada) will be the Reds participants in the game. I thought there was no way they wouldn’t include Chapman for the game, but it looks like I was wrong. Hopefully these guys do well.

The Billings Gazette has up some video from last nights game and you would probably be doing yourself a favor to watch the catch Billy Hamilton makes around the 26 second mark.

The Reds signed 11th round pick Drew Hayes and he is expected to begin in Billings.

Jordan Smith picked up his first MLB save last night, covering Francisco Cordero’s butt. You have to wonder if Smith is starting to get used to this relieving stuff.  It is his first year from the bullpen and in his 28.1 innings in AA he had just 14 strikeouts, but in the majors he has 4 in 4.2 innings so far.
