The Reds are in their first year without a Venezuelan team. They are now just in the Dominican Republic, but they have their own team as well as splitting a team with the Diamondbacks in order to give playing time to all of their players with the elimination of the Venezuelan team. The DSL Reds are 24-20 on the season, but the DSL Reds/DBacks team is a dreadful 9-37.

The Hitters

Alberti Chavez is a just turned 17 year old who is hitting .303/.344/.386 in 145 at bats with 10 doubles and a triple. He was a signing of note last season during the signing period and he is performing well in his age 16 season. Kevin Garcia is a 19 year old who is hitting .283/.422/.421 in 152 at bats. He has drawn 33 walks and has 27 strikeouts.  Ronald Bueno is a 19 year old who actually began the season in Arizona, but was sent to the DSL Reds after hitting well in limited action. Bueno is hitting just .233/.425/.433 in 30 at bats for the DSL Reds. Miguel Mendez has hit .277/.376/.347 as a 19 year old.

The Pitchers

There are a bunch of guys who have performed well. Here are some of their stats:

Player W L ERA SV IP H HR BB SO WHIP
Eury Cantalizo 4 1 1.03 1 35.0 26 0 8 32 0.97
Franderlin Romero 2 2 1.21 0 44.2 26 1 11 36 0.83
Carlos Patino 0 1 1.41 4 38.1 24 0 6 30 0.78
Jesus Parra 2 0 1.46 1 12.1 9 0 3 12 0.97
Ramon Sarrameda 1 2 1.80 0 35.0 29 2 8 27 1.06
Fabian Bohorquez 0 0 1.84 0 14.2 10 0 9 17 1.30
Juan Martinez 2 0 2.78 1 32.1 30 0 17 36 1.45
Jose De Sousa 2 3 3.00 1 21.0 17 1 11 26 1.33
Jose Rosario 1 2 3.03 0 32.2 26 0 15 28 1.26
Jairo Martinez 4 0 3.55 0 25.1 23 1 11 21 1.34
Josue Castellano 3 0 3.71 7 17.0 18 0 6 22 1.41
JR Morillo 1 1 3.98 0 31.2 27 0 7 22 1.07

I will be honest and admit that I know next to nothing about any of these players in terms of their stuff. Josue Casellano has the highest K rate of the pitchers and also has a strong strikeout-to-walk ratio. As a lefty and a 20 year old and a strong year in the Venezuelan League last year though, I imagine he would be stateside if his stuff were very good. The best looking guy when combining the stats and age would probably be Carlos Patino, a 19 year old right hander who has 38.1 innings between the two teams with 6 walks, 30 strikeouts and a 1.41 ERA.

Overall

There doesn’t seem to be a guy who is simply running through the league like there was two years ago when Ronald Torreyes set the league on fire. The two biggest Reds signees from last year were pitchers Jonathan Perez and Soid Marquez. Perez seems to be MIA on a roster right now, while Marquez has struggled in the DSL with his control.
