Game Notes

The Mustangs came into the game knowing if they won that they were the Champions of the Pioneer League while Orem had to win two games in a row. Things started out quite well for the Mustangs as they rallied in the second inning. Garrett Boulware doubled with one out and KJ Franklin followed with a 2-run homer to get the scoring started. Cory Thompson singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Brian O’Grady would single him in and then would come around after three straight walks to put the Mustangs up 4-0. Orem loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but a fly ball to Aristides Aquino made the second out and he fired to the plate and gunned down the runner trying to score to end the inning. Garrett Boulware and KJ Franklin got things started in the third inning with a single and a double to set up a sac fly by Cory Thompson to make it 5-0. Brian O’Grady would plate a sixth run later in the inning. Orem would begin to chip away in the bottom of the inning, making it 6-1 as they scored a single run. They would add another run in the fourth to make it 6-2. Things were dicey¬† in the sixth inning as Orem scored twice to make it 6-4 and had the tying run at the plate but a ground out kept it a two run lead for Billings. The Owlz scored a run with a 2-out double in the seventh to make it 6-5, but they had the tying run standing at second. After a pitching change a ground out on a nice play by Ty Washington ended the inning to preserve the lead. The Mustangs continued to walk the tight rope as Orem had two batters reach in the bottom of the eighth but once again the bullpen held on to the lead. Things wouldn’t come easily in the ninth as an error put the leadoff runner on second base and the next batter followed with a single to right, but the runner was held at third to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout to get the first out there was a wild pitch to move the runner at first up to second. A second strikeout of the inning by Brennan Bernardino didn’t erase the uneasiness as he fell behind the next batter and would intentionally walk him on the final two pitches to load the bases. The first pitch to the next batter was lined down the third base line but Taylor Sparks grabbed it to end the game and seal the Pioneer League Championship for the Mustangs.

AZL Reds have completed their season.
