The Cincinnati Reds fell to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon, 5-2. Things got away from the Reds in the latter stages of the game as they allowed two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings after taking a 2-1 lead in the seventh. Here are the highlights from the minor leaguers:

  • Chad Wallach went 1-2.
  • Eugenio Suarez went 1-2 with a solo homer.
  • Josh Satin went 1-2 with a double.
  • Ivan De Jesus went 1-2 with a double.
  • Kyle Skipworth went 1-1.
  • Tucker Barnhart went 1-2 with a double and a run.
  • Paul Maholm threw 3 shutout innings with a walk.
  • Kevin Gregg threw a shutout inning.

The offense was struggling for most of the game and it was tied at one in the seventh inning before Eugenio Suarez smacked a solo home run, his first of the spring, to put the Reds ahead 2-1.  Things didn’t last long though, as noted above, as the bullpen blew the lead.

Suarez continued his strong spring and is now 4-11 (.364). Tucker Barnhart got things going, notching his first hit in 11 at-bats with a double in the game. Chad Wallach also continued his hot start to the spring and is now hitting .444.

Paul Maholm had a strong start, allowing just two base runners in three shutout innings. He didn’t strike anyone out but he was a groundball machine on the day, getting seven ground outs.
