The Cincinnati Reds beat the Kansas City Royals this afternoon in Goodyear, 4-2. There were a few good things from the game worth noting.
Brandon Finnegan pitched well, allowing two runs in 4.1 innings with four strikeouts and no walks. It got scary early on as he had two different comebackers go off of his glove/hand in the same inning, with the second one leaving him shaking his hand for a second. He remained in the game and was fine, but with all of the pitching injuries the Reds have had to deal with to start the season, it wasn’t a fun look.
Keyvius Sampson returned to the mound, making just his second appearance of the spring. The right hander tossed a shutout frame and had a strikeout. He now has four without a walk in 2.0 innings.
Chris O’Grady has rebounded well since being shelled on March 8th for five runs in 0.1 innings. The lefty Rule 5 pick tossed 2.0 shutout innings today with a strikeout. That one outing is ruining his ERA, but he’s only allowed one hit combined in his other four outings to go along with four strikeouts and no walks.
Layne Somsen threw a perfect 9th inning to pick up the save. He’s yet to allow a run this spring in 5.0 innings and now has four total strikeouts.
Blake Trahan continues to take advantage of his limited playing time. He went 2-2 today and is now hitting .462 this spring.
