Above is me talking about some draft rumors and topics earlier this afternoon. Give it a watch.
Today is the big day, everyone. The Major League Baseball draft kicks off tonight at 7pm on MLB.com and MLB Network. The first two rounds will take place tonight, with rounds 3-10 happening on Friday and rounds 11-40 on Saturday.
Before we get started into some of the rumors for the day, let’s first start off by linking to all of my draft coverage, which now includes over 50 scouting reports and tons of just informational posts on players that the Cincinnati Reds may consider drafting between the #2 pick and their #43 pick in the 2nd round. That also includes my personal draft board that was published yesterday that has reasons to both draft each player in my top five and why the team should pass on each player in my top five.
This is also the place, given that this is the most popular set of three days each year on the website to remind you that you can help support all of the hard work here at the site by sending a small donation or by subscribing to the site for $4 a month and getting access to a few additional articles each month that are chock full of scouting reports on Reds prospects.
Alright, let’s jump into the rumors for the day – and note that this will be updated throughout the day as new information enters the conversation.
Both Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline agree in their latest mock draft, released less than an hour ago (it’s currently 9:46am ET) that the Cincinnati Reds will draft Tennessee third baseman Nick Senzel assuming that he’s on the board. That goes against the notion that they both had, as well as Baseball America and Keith Law at ESPN earlier this week that if Florida left handed pitcher AJ Puk were still on the board that he was the pick for the organization.
Of course, Keith Law still has the Reds selecting AJ Puk in his latest mock draft, which was also released this morning. To read the entire thing you need to be an Insider, but the first two picks are free, which includes the Reds. Here’s what he has to say:
They also like Nick Senzel and Corey Ray, and are also high on Moniak. The Reds have the largest pool of any team (most draft money), and just as importantly, they get to pick again before the Phillies or Braves do.
It seems that everyone believes the Phillies have locked onto California High School outfielder Mickey Moniak at #1.
There are some high school players who are floating out overslot bonus demands. According to Jim Callis these guys are telling teams they want overslot bonuses: Blake Rutherford, Matt Manning, Joey Wentz, Jared Horn, Drew Mendoza and Will Benson. While I doubt all of these guys are in play for the Reds at #35 or #43, I’d be shocked if a few of them weren’t there for the taking.
Here’s an interesting note from MLB Pipeline writer Jesse Burkhart on Kyle Lewis:
Latest buzz on Kyle Lewis is that his stock is dropping due to poor workouts/other concerns. Chance of him falling out of top 10, I’m told.

Baseball America has released their (likely) final mock draft within the last 45 minutes. They, like the crew at MLB Pipeline, have the Cincinnati Reds selecting Tennessee third baseman Nick Senzel. Here’s the brief thing they had to say:
Don’t sell Senzel short; he’s a plus runner and basestealer who can really hit, with plenty of track record. He’s no Joe Randa, in other words.
Frankie Pilierre just tweeted out that the latest rumor is that Blake Rutherford may have a predraft agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers, who draft 5th overall. That could take him out of the aforementioned group of high schoolers who could fall out of the first round and seek an overslot deal, potentially for the Reds to snatch up at #35 or #43.
C. Trent Rosecrans from the Cincinnati Enquirer just tweeted out that he believes the Cincinnati Reds will still select AJ Puk.

I missed this from two hours ago, but Frankie Piliere thinks that the Reds are still in on Kyle Lewis.
Any reason why the Reds would take the risk of drafting Puk when guys like Pint, Senzel, Lewis might be there. Seems like they are better options (higher ceiling or more safe or both)
Well maybe they won’t but that’s the buzz. They are heavy interested in Lewis and Senzel too
Update at 6:07pm
Just heard a rumor that the Reds are still in on AJ Puk at #2 from a good source. Roughly one hour until we find out.
That’s it for now. This post will be updated throughout the day.
