On Wednesday afternoon in the Arizona Fall League the Cincinnati Reds prospects continued to perform quite well in the league. Yesterday I wrote about the second straight outstanding start from left handed starter Seth Varner. Today we saw several players continue their seasons with Peoria.

Chad Wallach got the start at first base for the Javelinas and he went out and hit two doubles, going 2-5 with a run and an RBI. That’s pushed his line on the season up to .260/.327/.460 with four doubles, two home runs, four walks and 10 strikeouts in 50 at-bats. Infielder Zach Vincej continued his assault on Arizona Fall League pitching by going 1-3 with another double, a walk and a run scored. That, crazily, lowered his OPS to 1.210 with a .386/.460/.750 with five doubles, a triple, three home runs, six walks and seven strikeouts.

Evan Mitchell took the mound for 2.0 innings on Wednesday and didn’t allow a run, walking a batter and striking out two. Left hander Nick Routt entered the game later and fired a shutout inning of work with two strikeouts. It lowered his ERA to 3.72 on the season and he’s now allowed just one walk and has 11 strikeouts in 9.2 innings pitched. Barrett Astin came in for the 9th inning, a week after his last outing, and he picked up the save with a shutout inning with a strikeout as he lowered his ERA to 1.69 for Peoria.

In Mexico Sebastian Elizalde had a good night for Culiacan. He went 1-4 with a double, walk, run and an RBI on the night in a win. Alejandro Chacin tossed a perfect inning of relief in Venezuela for Aragua, keeping his ERA at 0.00 through seven games and 6.2 innings.

Baseball America talked with General Managers at the GM Meetings in Arizona earlier this week about the proposed International Draft. Most of them declined comment (the Reds GM Dick Williams either wasn’t asked, or declined to comment), but several did give some insight into things. Obviously the ones who did choose to speak chose their words very wisely as the last thing that they want to do is go against what their bosses want to implement. Go give it a read if you’re interested in that side of the game.
