When the spring began, Austin Beck was not among the first few rounds of mock drafts/draft rankings. The high schooler was coming off of ACL surgery, but he was on the radar as a player to keep an eye on.
He’s gone from “on the radar” to a possible Top 5 pick since the season began. Healthy once again, Austin Beck has been flying up draft boards. In the last year he has been able to add strength and size despite the knee injury holding him back for some of that time. He’s listed at 6′ 1″ and 210 lbs right now. At that size he’s still a plus runner and looks like he can handle center field. Beck has plus raw power. He’s very athletic. He’s got a strong arm. All five tools are present and all are above-average or better.
Here’s a video from earlier this month that Baseball America posted on their youtube channel:
Baseball America just released their latest 2017 Top 100 Draft Prospects this morning. Austin Beck has gone from not being in the Top 100 HIGH SCHOOL players in the country to start the season to being the #4 overall prospect in the draft after just a few weeks of play.
How does that happen? Well, now that he’s healthy again he’s showing off incredible tools and the production has been strong, though for high schoolers you expect that among the top drat pick types. One report from Baseball America has Beck listed with three 70 grade tools. Those types of guys are rare.
Should the Reds be interested?
The Cincinnati Reds hold the second overall pick in the draft this season. There’s still a lot of baseball to be played between now and June when the draft takes place. Still, with the kinds of reports that are coming out on Austin Beck, he’s really a guy to keep your eye on as we start getting closer to things. I still haven’t really gone in depth with where I’d prefer to see the Reds go with the pick, but right now I wouldn’t be opposed to them selecting Beck. The tools, the athleticism, he’s the kind of guy that could change a franchise if he develops.
