The Cincinnati Reds have called up left handed pitcher Cody Reed and optioned righty Keury Mella to Triple-A Louisville.Mark Sheldon beat his fellow beat writers to the news by a matter of seconds.

After starting the season in Cincinnati, Cody Reed was sent to the minors in mid-April and he hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since. Overall with the Louisville Bats, he’s made 17 starts and one relief appearance. That’s come with a 3.92 ERA in 105.2 innings with 109 hits, 31 walks, and 105 strikeouts. However, he’s pitched much better in his last four games. In that span he’s allowed just four earned runs in 26.0 innings with just three walks and 33 strikeouts. That’s good for a 1.38 ERA and a .498 OPS against.

For Keury Mella, the Majors Leagues were rough on the 24-year-old this season. He made four appearances and threw 9.1 innings, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits and four homers. Mella also walked eight batters with eight strikeouts. He will likely take over the rotation spot in Louisville vacated by Reed.

Ibandel Isabel named FSL Player of the Week

Daytona Tortugas home run king Ibandel ISabel was named Florida State League Player of the Week. He hit .500/.538/1.250 in six games with five home runs and three doubles. He’s closing in on the All-Time Florida State League record in home runs for a season. Currently, Isabel has 29, which leaves him four shy of tying the record. There are three weeks in the season remaining.

The week was good enough to also get Ibandel Isabel on the Baseball America Hot Sheet. He was the only Red to make it this week, coming in at #6 on the list. Here’s what JJ Cooper had to say:

Isabel swings really hard, and when he connects, he hits the ball very, very far. If this was 1968, the flaws in his game would overwhelm the positives. But in 2018, there may end up being some sort of role for a player who is a threat to homer pretty much anytime he steps into the batter’s box even if his strikeout rate (36 percent) is positively frightening. Isabel collects home runs in bunches. He had four home runs in a three-game stretch this week. He’s also had a seven home run in seven days stretch earlier this year.
