At this point in time you’ve seen that the Reds are calling up Nick Senzel for the game tonight in Cincinnati. If you somehow haven’t, you can read about what to expect from the top prospect moving forward.

Senzel wasn’t on the 25-man, or the 40-man roster prior to this morning. Moves have now been made to place him on both. Scooter Gennett was moved to the 60-day injured list, which opened up a spot on the 40-man roster. This move is retroactive to March 26th, meaning that Gennett could be activated as early as May 26th if he’s ready to play by then. To get the outfielder to the 25-man roster the team optioned reliever Matt Bowman to Triple-A. Bowman was called up on Tuesday to be insurance of a bullpen that was perhaps running low on arms. He never did pitch in a game while he was with the team.

Those aren’t the only roster moves that have taken place in the last 24 hours, though. Luis Gonzalez was promoted to Triple-A Louisville from Double-A Chattanooga. In 17 games played with the Lookouts he was hitting .326/.380/.478 with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. He made his debut last night as a pinch hitter.

Chattanooga had a few moves of note that were made yesterday. Ryan Hendrix was placed on the injured list with a right-elbow strain. Hendrix, one of the higher rated relievers in the Cincinnati farm system had not allowed an earned run all season in 10.1 innings, had 5 walks, and had struck out 15 batters.

Reliever Juan Martinez was sent from Louisville to Chattanooga. Outfielder Michael Beltre and infielder Calten Daal were both assigned to the Lookouts from extended spring training. For Daal, who is working his way back from a shoulder injury, it will be a big step on his way back. He played in just 40 games due to injury in 2016. He missed all of 2017. Last season he only played in 4 games. It’s been a long time coming to get back on the field for the Curacao native.

For Beltre he missed some time in the spring while dealing with a non-baseball related medical issue that caused a delay to the start of his season. He was in the starting lineup last night for Chattanooga and went 1-3 with a walk in his season debut.

Today in Daytona it was reliever Ryan Olson who went to the injured list with a lower back strain. Right-hander Dauri Moreta was called up from extended spring training to take his place in the Tortugas bullpen.

Olsen has been dealing with the back every year since and including college. He did last about three weeks longer than usual this season. I am afraid this is going to be similar to Alex Wood in the future. Once the back goes it is tough to make a prolonged comeback.

Hawkins released in Louisville with Wren likely to follow once Aquino is ready to come off the IL. That is, if there are no other injuries.

Thanks for explaining the retroactive part of the 60 day IL rule.

Any word on whether the Hendrix issue is serious?

No word. I’ve asked and haven’t gotten much of an answer.
