Cincinnati Reds infielder Derek Dietrich and catcher Curt Casali will begin rehab assignments with the Louisville Bats this week according to Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer. The 29-year-old Dietrich will join the Reds Triple-A affiliate in Columbus as they take on the Clippers. For the 30-year-old Casali, he will join the Bats on Tuesday. Louisville begins a road trip in Columbus on Monday and will be there through Thursday. They then head to Indianapolis for two games before returning home on Sunday.

Derek Dietrich hasn’t played in two weeks. He went 0-2 with a walk, run scored, and he was hit by a pitch against the Atlanta Braves. He was then placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. After his torrid start to the season where he hit .260/.366/.707 through the first 54 games of the year (through the end of May), he’s really fallen on hard times. In the 44 games since the start of June he’s hitting just .141/.331/.273. The shoulder has apparently been bothering him for a little bit – even before he went on the injured list. That could help explain some of what happened to the numbers over the last two months.

Curt Casali last played on July 15th against the Chicago Cubs. He went 1-3 with a solo home run that day, but was replaced in the lineup late in the game. He has been on the 10-day injured list ever since with a sprained right knee. Casali has played in 62 games for the Reds this season. He was hitting .253/.337/.420 with 7 doubles and 6 home runs when he was placed on the injured list.

While the Reds have not specified how long either will be on their rehab assignments, it seems like a safe bet that Curt Casali will be there longer. As a catcher he needs to show he can handle the stress of catching multiple games and have his knee show no signs of pain. He’s also been out a little bit longer, too.
