On Tuesday the Glendale Desert Dogs were at home and taking on the Mesa Solar Sox. Manager Luis Bolivar had a Cincinnati Reds heavy lineup with Jonathan India, Jose Garcia, and Tyler Stephenson all in the starting lineup. Reliever Dauri Moreta would pitch out of the bullpen on the day, too.

Jonathan India is starting to come around a bit. After a very rough start to the Arizona Fall League season, he’s gone 7-22 in the last seven games. On Tuesday he tripled, giving him an extra-base hit in each of his last three games. He homered in each of the previous two games.

Jose Garcia got the start at shortstop – his first start since October 10th. He went 1-3 with a double and an RBI. It was the fourth straight game with a hit, and his second straight with a double. Tyler Stephenson went 0-4. It’s the first game he’s had out of his 11 games played in which he hasn’t reached base.

Duari Moreta, like Jose Garcia, last played on October 10th. The reliever came out and fired a perfect 9th inning for the Desert Dogs as he picked up the save. His ERA dropped to 2.00 in his 9.0 innings pitched for Glendale.

Alex Powers debuts in Mexico

After dominating in the upper levels of the minor leagues, posting a 1.64 ERA between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A and Louisville, Alex Powers made his debut for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo on Tuesday night. And there was no feeling out process, either. The right-hander was thrown into the fire with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the 6th inning. He hit the first batter he faced, but then got a strikeout and a double play to get out of the inning with just one inherited run coming across. He would then come out for the 7th inning and get through it without allowing a hit and maintain a 6-1 lead.

Cincinnati Reds player stats in the winter leagues

The Hitters

Of note – Rafael Franco’s Mexican Winter League team played a few games in the Arizona Fall League. They were ‘pre-season’ games for the Mexican League teams, but officially counted for the AFL teams. That’s why he’s got the designation in the league as AFL/MX. He’s not currently on the active roster of his Mexican League team now that their season has begun.

The Pitchers

Just like with Rafael Franco, Jefferson Lopez isn’t playing in the Arizona Fall League, but his Mexican Winter League team did play in games against AFL teams. As such, the league he’s in has been designated as both. He’s also not currently on the active roster of his team in the Mexican Winter League.

How bout Jorge Soler as a trade candidate for the reds? He’s only due 4 mil or so next season and has an arbitration season available after that before becoming an UFA. He had a monster year after a very so so career to that point. So maybe price tag isn’t so high?? Maybe an India headliner gets it done?? If reds can pull something like that off- it frees up a lot of FA dollars that would be addressing Corner OF need.

If Reds go FA- I prefer Puig to Ozuna.

I prefer Puig as well although I lack any side by side analysis. If equivalent, Puig plays really hard, brings energy and flair, and is getting old enough now to have that be actual leadership.
