The crew at MLB Pipeline/MLB.com updated each organization’s Top 30 Prospects this week. While it’s a weird situation in 2020 without the minor league season being played and thus making updating a prospect list all kinds of weird, there are some reasons that we should be doing so. First, the draft was held and that has added several players to each club’s farm system. The second thing is that while most guys in each farm system are on their own to try and get their work in, some guys are playing in the Major Leagues right now, and a few more are playing at the alternate sites around baseball.
While we, of course, think that the Cincinnati Reds top prospect list here at RedsMinorLeagues.com is the best of the bunch, having other lists with differing viewpoints is plenty valuable. It brings different reasonings and thoughts on players and sparks discussion that may open us up to new information or new ways to look at things.
The new and updated MLB list doesn’t have any changes at the top two spots where Nick Lodolo and Hunter Greene rank 1st and 2nd. But there is a new name at the 3rd spot on the list with 2020 1st round pick Austin Hendrick jumping ahead of Tyler Stephenson, Jonathan India, and Jose Garcia on the list.
In the 2020 Major League Baseball draft, the Cincinnati Reds had six picks. Five of those picks made the top 30 list, with 4th round pick Mac Wainwright being the lone wolf from the draft class that was on the outside looking in. Hendrick was the only draft pick that made the Top 10.
Along with the new Top 30’s for each organization, they also ranked the various farm systems. Much like the Baseball America farm system rankings, the MLB.com rankings have the Reds organization in the bottom third of the league, coming in at 21st overall – better than the 25th spot they were on the Baseball America rankings. These rankings place the Reds in the middle of the National League Central, trailing the Cardinals at #14 and the Pirates at #16, but ahead of the Cubs at #22 and the Brewers who are dead last at #30.
