The Cincinnati Reds are sending a few players out on rehab assignments this week. Relief pitcher Lucas Sims and outfielder Albert Almora Jr. will begin rehab assignments tonight. Starting pitcher Mike Minor will begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday.
Lucas Sims is going to be joining the Triple-A Louisville Bats this week. They are on the road, opening up a 6-game series in Omaha against the Storm Chasers. Sims, who had back spasms set him back during spring training, is eligible to come off of the injured list in two days, but will likely be on rehab for a little longer than that as he will need to get a few outings in and probably show he can go back-to-back days before he’ll be activated.
Mike Minor won’t pitch tonight, but he is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment in Double-A on Wednesday with the Chattanooga Lookouts. They’ll be playing at home against the Birmingham Barons. The left-handed starter dealt with a sore left shoulder in the early part of spring training and with a shortened camp he simply wasn’t able to get ready in time to begin the regular season. He’s ready to get out there and begin building up, having thrown some live batting practice and gotten work in during the spring and first week of the season.
Unlike the other two, Albert Almora Jr. is not on the big league roster or it’s injured list. But he is on the injured list for the Triple-A Louisville Bats and he’s starting a rehab assignment with the High-A Dayton Dragons tonight as they begin a 6-game series in northern Ohio against the Lake County Captains. During big league spring training he went 3-6 with a walk and a stolen base in four games before he was sent to minor league camp.
