There are not going to be any Monday off-days in the farm system anymore this season as the Dominican Summer League and the Arizona Complex League both opened up their seasons and will play on nearly every Monday moving forward.

If you are interested in getting emailed every day during the season with additional game notes and a rundown on how the Cincinnati Reds Top 25 Prospects performed (along with other perks) you can sign up to support the site through Patreon and get all of that for a few bucks a month. If that’s something that sounds interesting you can get more information here.

Could either Abbott or Williamson make the jump from AA this year to MLB next year?

Assuming the Reds do trade both Castillo and Mahle (even with Greene, Lodolo, and Ashcraft as 3 good, young arms) that leaves 2 holes in the rotation.

I could see possibly filling 1 spot by relenting to use Gutierrez as a low-end #5 starter, giving Sanmartin another chance, wasting $13M on Minor, or signing a reclamation project to a minor league deal. But none of those options are guaranteed to stick.

    • Stock

I think they both could make the jump but don’t understand why the Reds would do that. If they trade Mahle and Castillo (and I was saying last winter they should blow everything up then) they are punting 2023. Why rush anyone?

      • Doug Gray

Because it’s not rushing if you are ready. And at some point, someone has to throw those innings.

    • Doc

Overton is also a consideration for one of the spots.

      • Chase

You guys also forgot Dunn, who I think the Reds see as a back of the rotation arm. The Reds have options, but I think only Castillo gets traded. Mahle’s value has dropped considerably, maybe the Reds will try to extend him. I would like to have one veteran pitcher in the rotation.

      • MBS

Right, Overton looked very good, and Dunn has a pretty good career so far. That being said the 5 best should make it, and if that means Overton or Dunn are in AAA, then so be it. We will always need a 6th or 7th pitcher in AAA at minimum. I am really more concerned about McLain making it. Our starting pitching is solid, but we’re going to need to find some offense in 23.

    • Shawn

Good chance Williamson And Abbott can be ready by the trade deadline next season. Reds should sign a couple pitchers in the off season, flip them at the deadline and bring those two up then.

    Leonardo Balcazar
Possibly the youngest player in the AZL. He is still 17.
    Batting 3rd and playing SS.

He entered my top 20 last summer and may move into the top 10 with a good performance this summer.

It is nice to have more players to watch now (Balcazar, Jorge, Almonte, Valdez, Cabrera, Pineda, Omana, Sanchez, Reyes, Valencia and others). I am hoping Valdez and Cabrera join Jorge (16 in November), Balcazar (19) and Almonte (23) in my top 25.

  3. Krozley

Loud start for Ariel Almonte. I saw him in ST and he is a tall man with some room to fill out. Seems to have all the tools. The guy to watch in the ACL I think.

    • DaveCT

That’s definitely a team to go see in person.

Doug, do you see the Reds moving any prospects up a level in the coming days/weeks? It looks like Phillips is ready for AA and Dela Cruz looks ready for AA as well. I know McLain would have to move up for SS to open at AA. Just wondering if you have heard anything on those fronts?

    • Doug Gray

Haven’t heard anything, but usually don’t with stuff like this either. That said, I wouldn’t be moving any of those guys right now, but if I were to pick one of the three you mentioned it would be Phillips. I think the shortstops all have stuff they need to work on at the level they are at.

      • MBS

Phillips has looked very good, but I agree with you, I wouldn’t move any of them up. I was very much promote McLain early in the season, but you talked me off the edge. At this point in the season, I’d only promote the guys who are old for their level, doing well, (McGarry, Gilliam, Tenerowicz) and aren’t top prospects.

I still think McLain could make it to the Reds next year, but he needs to cut down on his k’s. Once he does that, AAA here we come.

  5. Mark

Mahle and Senzel should be packed together and get the best offer you can for them whether it’s mlb players with great potential or milb with great potential these are the two who need to be traded not Castillo .

  6. SteveO

Tenerowicz promotion to Louisville odd timing. It coincides with India and Solano going there on rehab assignments. How much will he actually play now with crowded IF. He should stay down in Chattanooga and get maximum PT at 1B. Looks like Free will get more PT at 1B in Chattanooga.

    • DaveCT

Perhaps the ML club wants to get a look at him while they are evaluating India and Barrero?

  7. MBS

It is easy to argue that our AAA infield is better than our MLB infield.

AAA: 1B Moran, 2B India, 3B Solano, SS Barrero, DH Schrock
MLB: 1B Votto, 2B Reynolds, 3B Drury, SS Farmer, DH Moustakes

    • SteveO

Actually, Santana at1B. Much better than Moran this season.

    • DaveCT

It’s therefore also easy to argue that we are truly existing in the upside down. 2022 … say no more.

Dragons had a big night last night plus the Loons play some awful defense.Torres got into some rare air by hitting a ball that wan’t fair leading off the 1st inning. He hit a ball to left field that was 20 feet fouls that left the ballpark, cleared the street and hit the lumber company building on the fly. That is Wily Mo Peña territory.
