Donovan Solano showed Durham why he’s a big leaguer in a Louisville win, Matt McLain homered for the first time in nearly a month in a Chattanooga extra-innings win, Rece Hinds hit a homer that may not have landed yet for Dayton, and Javi Rivera tossed 5.0 shutout innings in Daytona’s win on Sunday afternoon.

De La Cruz, Hinds and Hendrick struck out once in 12 PAs today, when the team struck out 11 times overall.

De La Cruz is slashing .344 /.400 /.703 in June (with 6 stolen bases in 16 games), and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in Chattanooga Tuesday. It isn’t the Reds’ style, but he needs better competition to continue his trajectory of improvement.

Four games left in the first half only leading by 1/2 game. I don’t see anyone leaving till at least next week.

      • Old Big Ed

Yeah, you are probably right about that, but the end of the first half ought to be a demarcation point for him at Dayton.

It’s a trip watching guys develop in real time right before your eyes. At the start of the season, my money would have been that Elly would take his lumps in his first year of full season ball but grind it out and ultimately have a good year. But, at 19, with a very real chance of bumping up to AA, it’s hard not to notice.

The Pirates just promoted O’Neil Cruz. Want a comp for Elly De La Cruz? I’d watch this guy.

    • Old Big Ed

Oneil Cruz, though, is 3+ years older than EDLC, although like a lot of guys has the Covid year to thank for a development set back. He is only 6 months younger than Jose Barrero, who lost the Covid year AND a year at about age 18 or 19 due to immigration issues from Cuba.

Oneil is even taller than EDLC, but he is not a switch hitter. I tend to believe that De La Cruz will eventually drop the switch-hitting, but I don’t know the protocol for making that change. I suppose that he will have to reach that decision himself.

Ed, you wrote my response for me! Only thing you missed is that, at 3 years older, Cruz qualifies as a comp, being older and more advanced. Don’t be surprised if Elly grows and inch or more, either.

Solano should join the Reds for the Dodgers series. Not sure what the 40 man move will be though. Colin Moran DFA? Aquino will need a rehab stint, so a move to the 60 day could make sense (he was out 4-6 weeks initially reported). Lodolo has already been out almost sixty days, and needs another rehab start, so they could delay the decision a few days by moving him (unless that isn’t allowed since he’s already on rehab?).

Pineda has been the best player on the DSL team. As disappointing as the start for Cabrera has been Pineda has been equally impressive. Couple more hits so far today too

    • DaveCT

Cabrera has 33 professional at bats at age 17.

If there is one truth you very, very young prospects, it is don’t live and die on inconsistencies. Or even bad seasons. Check out Eric Davis’ rookie year at Billings.
