Tyler Stephenson looked good on his rehab assignment in Louisville that also saw Alejo Lopez and Stuart Fairchild homer in the Bats extra-innings win, Alex McGarry homered again as he extended his hitting streak to 17 games, Javi Rivera and Julian Aguiar were dominant on the mound once again for Daytona in the Tortugas win, and down in the Dominican Summer League Ricardo Cabrera and Carlos Sanchez had big days at the play in the Reds victory.

Rivera, 65 pitches, 46 strikes, and Aguiar, 46 pitches and 34 strikes. These are both looking like breakout candidates.
Man, what does Rivera need to do to get promoted to Dayton? Same feeling with Boyle. He had a stinker the last time out, but was dominant until then all season. With his stuff, is it really a big thing if he’s walking A+ or AA batters? I’m wondering what DLC is thinking when Hendrick, who was hitting in the low .200s gets promoted and he doesn’t. Is the organization just waiting for them to be All-Stars in their respective leagues first before promoting them? At the latest, they should be promoted after the trade deadline and 2022 MLB draft when it’s expected that many players will enter the organization.
With the roster limits of both Dayton and Daytona being 30, I wonder why the organization didn’t incorporate the piggyback system that Daytona is using with Dayton? Daytona has 8-10 pitchers that should get between 80-120 innings this year if no injuries occur. Hopefully, a few get promoted to Dayton. I kinda like this system at the lower levels and hope both Dayton and Daytona use it in 2023. The cream will rise to the top as they go higher in the system. Great job tonight as Rivera went 5 and Aguilar 4. It worked ideally and they won 3-2.
Dayton currently stands at 28 active players on the roster and are two pitchers short. This has really stressed their bullpen which showed up in 20-1 loss on Monday. Really don’t understand why the organization has allowed them to be stressed this way.
One wonders why the piggyback system doesn’t appear to be under serious consideration for the Reds given their atrocious BP. With a lot of potentially good arms coming up, piggyback. Assigned roles. Regular pitching rotation. And fewer BP decisions by DB. Be innovative because being conventional just isn’t getting the job done.
They released a “Bird” in Louisville yesterday
Thought he might be coming into his own.
Dugger getting called up to make a start in one of the doubleheader games? A spot needs to be cleared on the 40 man roster. No likely candidates to move from 10 or 15 day IL to 60 day IL. Only one I can think of is Warren, if his injury turned out to be more serious. There was a report of no ligament damage for him. Maybe Solomon DFA?
Or Randy Wynne. As for the roster move, you could maybe move Gutierrez to the 60. I know he’s been throwing bullpens, but he’s been on for a month or so already, and could be activated early August. The Reds could use all 30 allotted rehab days, and decide if he’s going to start or relieve (especially depending on what happens with Mahle/Castillo, and to a much much lesser extent, Minor).
Or, a DFA of one of the catchers, since Stephenson is set to return soon.
what about having Jeff Hoffman start one of the games?
someone will get moved to the 60 day DL. Gutierrez and Aquino have been out for a month and Warren’s injury will likely require quite a bit of rest and/or TJ surgery. Plenty of options to avoid losing a younger player to DFA. Lets hope Dugger can give us 5 innings because if he can’t we’re going to see position players pitching.
Rivera and Aguiar both need to be in Dayton soon.
I am confused (and to be honest, a little bummed) by the Tenerowicz news. I thought he may even earn a cup of coffee with the Reds after the trade deadline. Wonder if something happened behind the scenes.
The 2 runs scored on Dunn were let in by the reliever. He did however, free-pass the bases loaded before exiting.
Fairchild and Lopez both need extended looks (with consistent starts) at the major league level after the trade deadline.
Put Fairchild in LF and leave him there the rest of the year.
After Naquin and Pham are traded I really hope they give Fairchild an everyday spot in the lineup.
I know Fraley will take one of the spots but I’m worried they’ll give the other back to Aquino
Yep. I’d slide Senzel to LF and put Fairchild in CF.
Agree with several opinions on here. After the trade deadline, 4 or 5 positions need to be turned over to youngsters and we just need give them extended playing time over the remaining vets – including Votto.
Fairchild batting in the 7th or 8th spot frequently in the Bats lineup despite he’s crushed the ball having .333 Avg and 1.100+ OPS in 63 PAs since he arrived at AAA Louisville…
I wonder if Buck Farmer could be considered again to be called to the Reds depleted and pummeled bullpen even Fernando Cruz could be taking a chance too…
Would like to see them activate Dunn soon. He seems to be finally healthy. I realize he is only built up to be able to go 4 or possibly 5but that is all the starters are going anyway. His 4 or 5 would no doubt be better than they are getting from anyone in the bullpen.
I expected more out of Maureta, honestly. I’m still bothered by them using Duarte in Louisville after he got sent down, flying him across the country and using him immediately.
Doug, any word on Rey? Chattanooga gets to 80 games on Sunday. I’m guessing he goes to Goodyear for a few weeks and gets some PT with the ACL team.
DLC 3 HRs today! Ticket to Chattanooga?
Oh wow!
Great job by Roa!
Wow, Stephenson with the Golden Sombrero. Don’t think that even happened with the Reds.
