When trades do happen, I hope Lopez gets some regular playing time with Cincinnati.

How’s TJ Hopkins’ defense in center? He hits enough for a CF, but if he’s pushed to left or right (like this year because of Siani playing CF), is there enough power there to be acceptable?

Here in the next week+ as trades and draft signings happen, hopefully some dudes get moved up a level.
Ascanio, Antonia, Balcazar, Jorge to A.
Boatman, Rivera, Cooper, Aguiar, Sandridge to A+
    Gayman, Boyle, Roa to AA.
McGarry, Hopkins or Siani, Garcia, Nutof to AAA.

Also, Doug, you’ve probably seen, but per Sal Stewart’s instagram account, he’s signed. Not sure the $$, but he’s signed!

Just way too many hits and free passes given up by the pitching staffs of Louisville and Chattanooga – and I’m talking hard hits, not seeing eye singles. Look at the ratio of strikes to pitches thrown by each pitcher. We have a serious pitching development problem – our pitchers cannot or will not throw strikes. If they can’t throw at least 60% of their pitches as strikes I really think its time they find another line of work. I also think its time for pitching coach and development guys to go elsewhere.

Better performance by the hitters last night. Much less strike outs and some guys taking walks. However, most of our international free agents seem to never progress above the single A level.

I really think our development of many players is not good enough. I could see some positive signs hen Boddy was with us. I can’t see much improvement in the pitching from top to bottom any more. For an organization that has put so much into drafting and developing the last few years this is starting to become very concerning.

Agreed. A carefully recruited development staff got radically changed the latter part of last year. The 2020-2021 results were the best of my lifetime. Hoping for a bounce back in August…

The coaching could certainly be the problem. More likely, at least on the Reds roster and at AAA, the root cause is injuries. The Reds have nine relievers on the IL (Antone, Sims, Cessa, Santillan, Wilson, Warren, Detwiler, Duarte, Gutierrez) plus Dunn and Overton. This not only affected the big league roster but take a look at the Bat’s pitchers–one pitcher on the 40-man roster, Jared Solomon. A lack of healthy talent will make any coach look bad.

As for pitching development, there are some good indicators.

We have three rookie pitchers starting (and developing) in the ML’s.

The next wave, Williamson, Abbott, Phillips, has been promoted to AA or AAA before midseason, or are pitching successfully at Hi-A (Boyle, Bonnin, Roa, Kravitz).

There are Lo-A kids showing very good promise. Aguiar, Rivera, Petty, Benschoter, Cooper, Parks, Abel, and Franco are all fairly successful in the tandem starter system.

I’d say the development system is doing OK.

With all the deserved hype of Elly the equal story of the year equally should be McGarry. Another rise of prospect obscurity, to daily coverage.

    • Doug Gray

How both of these guys perform the rest of the season will likely determine which one of them gets the nod for player of the year. Elly has the advantage of defense and steals over McGarry, so McGarry’s going to have to out hit him, but it certainly feels like it’s a 2-man race right now (with all due respect to a guy like Joe Boyle).

Is Santana someone to watch as a future contributor?

    • Doug Gray

I think it’s possible he could have a future as a utility guy. He’s made some real strides this year.

Elly 0-5 with 3 K’s and Berrero 0-4 with 2 K’s and a BB. Would love to see these guys put up insane numbers going forward.

If you look at Vellojin’s numbers in A+ he’s doing really well. I know catchers come along slower than other positions, but what’s the odds that he is MLB ready by 24. Stephenson’s position change is becoming more probable by each injury sustained. I’ve come around to him switching at least, not sure if he feels the same.

McLain late scratch at Chattanooga. Also, Allen activated yesterday, but not in starting lineup either today. Why activate him if he can’t play?

    • SteveO

Sorry, one has $200k, but also shows $219k. Not sure which is correct
