Each spring there are 60-something players that get invited to big league spring training with each organization. Everyone on the 40-man roster is automatically invited, but every team will extend invitations to another 20-25 guys each year that will include some prospects from their farm system as well as some veteran type minor league signings that the team feels could potentially make the team.

But each year the Cincinnati Reds also have a group of minor leaguers come to Arizona a few weeks before minor league spring training begins in early March. Some players are there for different reasons than others, but one of the goals is to have players ready to go if and when the big league club needs additional players for certain days. With big league games starting before minor league camp begins, there would not be anyone to be called up from minor league camp to provide extra innings in case of too many guys in big league camp reaching their pitch limits during the games, or giving a position player a chance to get into a big league spring game  – something that happens frequently when teams are playing split squad games.

This year the Reds invited 49 players to “Early Minor League Camp”. There are 23 pitchers and 26 position players on the list. Let’s take a look at who will be showing up early this year:

    Nice list

It looks like all the minor league catchers (A ball and above) are on it except for Garrett Wolforth. Did he transition to 1B permanently?

He was released after the season. Signed with Arizona in January according to the transaction list.

He’s still in the organization. Just not invited to early camp.
