The Cincinnati Reds are playing two games this afternoon in Arizona – their final split squad day of the spring – and they will be turning to two of their top pitching prospects to take the mound as starters in each game. Rhett Lowder will get the start against the Texas Rangers in Goodyear and Lyon Richardson will get the start on the road against the Chicago White Sox.

Lowder, the #2 prospect in the organization and top pitching prospect, has made two appearances with the big league club this spring but neither of those came as a starting pitcher. Both of his outings came early in the spring. He threw a shutout inning on February 26th against Milwaukee. Six days later he was back on the mound and allowed a run in 2.0 innings against Kansas City. The Reds sent him to minor league camp four days later as a part of their first cuts. He hasn’t pitched in a big league game since then.

Richardson, the team’s #17 prospect and #5 pitching prospect, made his big league debut last year. This spring he, like Lowder, made two appearances with the Reds. His first outing was also on February 26th, but his game came against the Seattle Mariners where he threw 2.0 shutout innings. The righty then pitched on March 3rd against Kansas City and he was charged with an unearned run that day while giving up just one hit in 2.0 innings. Cincinnati optioned him to minor league camp on March 9th and he hasn’t been back to pitch in a big league game since.

Unfortunately, as it feels like many things tend to be for the Reds in spring training, there is no television coverage of either game today. And there is also no Statcast pitch/batted ball tracking in either of these games. The regular season can’t get here soon enough…. at least we can watch most of the minor league games and get some Statcast stuff from some of those games.

Not yet. Hoping to talk to some people before this weekend and will see what I can gather.
