Brandon Williamson threw well in his rehab start with Louisville, Bubba Thompson had three hits for Chattanooga, Victor Acosta had two hits and an RBI for Dayton, and Carter Graham extended his on-base streak to 13 games in Daytona. We’re also trying something new – including one set of game notes each day as a little bit of a “free teaser” for the Patreon stuff, which has seen new subscriptions essentially stop. Maybe we’ve just reached the limit of Reds fans who are interested…. but I figured it was worth a shot.

If you are interested in getting emailed every day during the season with additional game notes and a rundown on how the Cincinnati Reds Top 25 Prospects performed (along with other perks) you can sign up to support the site through Patreon and get all of that for a few bucks a month. If that’s something that sounds interesting you can get more information here.

Game Notes

It was a 5-run 2nd inning for Tennessee that did Chattanooga in on Sunday afternoon.

Jose Torres hit his first home run of the season. He’s played in 31 games in which he’s had a plate appearance this year. Torres last homered on August 19th. He homered the day before that, too. But he played in 20 games after that – so he had gone 50 games between homers.

Bubba Thompson had his first 3-hit game since joining Chattanooga.

Carson Rudd had nine walks in 9.1 innings in April, but kept his ERA at 2.89 despite the struggles. Since the start of May he’s walked 10 batters in 21.1 innings and he’s struck out 29 and he’s lowered his ERA to 1.76 in that span – giving up just two earned runs along the way.

Donovan Benoit gave up six runs in 0.1 innings in his first outing of the season. The next time out he gave up another run in an inning of work. Since then he’s thrown 22.2 innings, allowed three runs (1.19 ERA), just 10 hits, no home runs, walked seven, and he’s struck out 20.

Tyler Callihan attempted a bunt in the 6th inning, but the ball struck him in the hand. He offered at the pitch, though, so it was a strike . The trainer came out and checked on him and after about two minutes he remained in the game and finished the at-bat that included a foul ball before he’d swing over a slider for strike three. Serving as the designated hitter he remained in the game, technically, until the spot came up in the lineup again when he was pinch hit for.

Roa with a couple of ok outings in a row. Gradually bringing that era down. That 40 man roster spot is precarious. Hope he continues to improve. Is he a bullpen arm now?
Great to see Williamson apparently healthy.

    • Andrew

Definitely seems Roa has been moved to the pen

  2. MK

Would like to see Carter Graham promoted to Dayton. Watching him the past week he has pretty quality professional at bats..

Ichiro Cano starting over Robinson Suzuki….

    • MK

Thought Ichiro’s last name was Hernandez not Cano.

    • PTBNL

Now that is some names there! Maybe it will work for Jeter Downs some day.

Interesting seeing Sanchez and Mariano batting 1/2. Do the other guys have more power, or are they just trying to get their best hitters the most at bats?

Rodriguez has an .11% strike out rate. Has there been any Reds minor leaguers in recent years with better numbers in that regard?

    • The Duke

Ronald Torreyes had a 6.2% K rate for Low A Dayton back in 2011 at 18 years of age. That was the first name that came to mind for me. Hit .356/.398/.457 across 306 plate appearances.

Thanks Duke. Good to know. Rodriguez and Stewart doing well in the not striking out department.
