The Dominican Summer League Rojos got their season started, but the DSL Reds were rained out on opening day, and out in Arizona it was a big game for Sheng-En Lin and several other Reds as they put up 12 runs in a 7-inning game.

If you are interested in getting emailed every day during the season with additional game notes and a rundown on how the Cincinnati Reds Top 25 Prospects performed (along with other perks) you can sign up to support the site through Patreon and get all of that for a few bucks a month. The ACL Reds won 12-5. Box Score

Game Notes

Sheng-En Lin had gone two games in a row without a hit. He made up for that with a 3-hit day on Monday night. He’s now hitting .364/.473/.545. His average is 3rd best in the league, his 17 runs batted in at tied for 5th in the league, his on-base percentage is 6th, his slugging is 9th, and his OPS is 8th. Oh, his triple was his 4th of the year and that’s tied for the league lead.

With two steals, Kyle Henley took the lead in Arizona with 13 steals.

Luis Reyes has played in 14 games with the Reds this season and he’s had hits in 12 of them. He’s now hitting .353/.414/.529 on the year with five walks and 11 strikeouts.

Eddy Isturiz had two extra-base hits in the first nine games of his season. He matched that on Monday night.

Joneiker Arellano lowered his ERA to 3.77 on the season through five outings. He’s thrown 14.1 innings, hasn’t allowed a home run, walked five batters, and now has 16 strikeouts.

The DSL Reds were postponed.

The game will be made up on June 15th as a part of a doubleheader.

The DSL Rojos lost 5-1. Box Score

Game Notes

Early on the notes for the two DSL clubs are likely to be limited. Many of the players are in their 1st season, so we can’t talk about improvements from last year, or anything carrying over. And there’s no ability to watch or even listen to a broadcast of the game, so it’s pretty much just box score reading at this point.

With that said, here’s a fun tidbit from this one: The Reds started Ichiro Cano and the Pirates Black started Iverson Allen.

Wild game in Ariz. Imagine you are the Brewers catcher, it’s 100 degrees, your pitchers have thrown eight wild pitches, and the Reds team has stolen 10 bases on you. Rough day at the office.

  2. The Duke

Have a day Lin, two singles, a triple, sac fly, stolen base, 3 rbi. .364/.473/.546 line through 74 PA so far.

Just noticed McAfee is a 26th round, 774th pick in the ‘21 draft. Fourteen homers last season at AA. Hope he’s healthy and can get back to Lville and continue to hit them.

McAfee has generally surpassed my expectations every year. He’s outperformed higher profile but similar guys from the same draft era, such as Ivan Johnson, Tyler Callihan, Yan Contreras, etc. Plays all over, can hit a bit, has some pop. Clubs need these guys.

Sheng En-Lin wants to join Stafura at Daytona apparently.
Los Rojos seem to have a better roster than the Reds at DSL since they have Sanchez, Mariano and Morillo combined.

I noticed on the ACL Reds roster that Jake Gilbert, an Air Force Academy Grad under the same Military Academy Rules governing Jacob Hurtubise, is listed as non-active due to Military Service. Doing a little research I find that some of the rules governing this service has changed, though Jake and Jacob are considered grandfathered in under rules at the time of their graduation. What has changed for them is a new rule calls for a report to be filed at the end of each year showing career progress, which Gilbert has not shown much. i wonder if this is why Jake is now serving and maybe a little motivation for promoting Jacob when they did.

    Lowder, 6 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 0 bb’s, 11 k’s on 88 pitches/66 strikes.

This against a pretty good Trash Pandas team.
