Game Notes

Carlos Sanchez homered for the first time this season. He played in 22 games with Daytona before winding up on the injured list following his game on May 2nd. That was also the day he picked up his first extra-base hit of the season – a double. He returned to the field on June 25th and has now played in nine games with the ACL Reds, going 7-30 (.233).

After going hitless in five straight games, Juan Garcia has hits in his last two games.

John Michael Faile didn’t pick up a hit, but he walked twice to extend his on-base streak to 13 games.

Abraham Gaitan lowered his ERA to 2.00 on the season through his 18.0 innings pitched. His five strikeouts on Monday night established a new season high, which had previously been two. The five strikeouts also matched his career high.

Juan Polo made his Reds debut in this game. He last pitched professionally in 2019 for the Dominican Summer League Royals. Somewhere between the end of 2019 and 2022 he was released and made his way to the United States where he played college baseball for Kansas Christian College before transferring to St. Thomas University where he pitched this past season, throwing 35.0 innings with a 4.89 ERA with 33 walks and 62 strikeouts. He signed with the Reds on June 12th.

I’m looking forward to when Colina is moved back to the bullpen, and made a closer, so we can get a headline which reads, “Jesus saves” :-)

So a player was a professional player in the Dominican but then was allowed to come and pitch at the college level. What is the loophole that allowed that to happen?

So if you are a pro you can not play D1 baseball after you sign a contract. But you are eligible for D2/NAIA. For every year you play professionally you forfeit a year of eligibility of college baseball. Jayvien Sandridge did the same kind of thing before joining the Reds two years ago.

Kind of a lost year for Carlos Sanchez. It’d be nice to see him get back to Daytona even if only for August after the complex leagues finish up. He looked fine at short stop and i like his bat.

He absolutely has to find a way to hit the ball in the air more. Like, A LOT more.
