The Dayton Dragons won 5-0. Box Score

Game Notes

The win by Dayton was the series clincher and the Dragons will be in the league championship series for the first time in the club’s history. Dayton will face off against Quad Cities in a best-of-three series. Game one will be in Quad Cities on Sunday night at 6:00pm ET. Game two will be on Tuesday at 7:05pm ET in Dayton. The third game, if necessary, will be played on Wednesday in Dayton at 7:05pm ET.

The Dragons took the lead in the 4th inning. With two outs and the bases loaded Damian Ruiz lined a double that cleared the bases to make it 3-0. He would then try to steal home on what was likely a suicide squeeze, but on the play the catcher jumped out in front of the plate as the pitch was about to be thrown and was called for a catchers balk, turning over the play where Ruiz was thrown out at the plate by 10 feet. That built the lead to 4-0. Dayton then added a run on Ryan McCrystal’s home run.

McCrystal went 7-12 (.583) in the series.

Jimmy Romano threw 4.1 hitless innings in his two outings during the series.

Congrats to Dayton! Was Dom Fletcher showing off his arm in hopes of a big-league call-up?

Gotta give him credit for giving it a shot and hopefully having some fun. A minor league field with a depleted team at the end of a disappointing season can be a bleak place. Sort of like a Steinbeck story. It’s one reason why you can’t get too down on the kids hanging in there and still trying their best.

It seemed Great Leakes was a tough team to defeat. Nice job by the Dragons going to play the league champioship. The pitching was pretty solid hope that keeps in that way …

The crowd in Dayton hopefully showed the Reds brass how starved Southwest Ohio is for a winning baseball experience and how much money they could make. The sellout crowd actually made the concrete stadium shake. It was an outpouring of excitement not seen around here since 1990.

Sure seemed like a well played game on the Dragon’s part. Once they got a larger lead they were holding onto it like a terrier. Good chance to take down the vaunted Dodgers down a notch, too. I would not be surprised if the Loons manager gets fined for staying on the field after getting ejected but also how he kept after the ump.

If he is back I doubt he will be in the dugout much the first week as a suspension will carry over. He was complaining both nights in Dayton especially check swing calls. Don’t know if having four umpires made the calls better, but seemed most went against the Loons. I’m still wanting payback from when they hit Jose Siri to end his hit streak. This helped.Really think this was the first time these guys and Manager participated in front of of this sized hostile crowd a were a little intimidated, but I also think the Dragons felt the energy. After the game Julio Morillo reminded team to salute the crowd which the did.

Beau Blanchard told me that he will be the starter for today’s game.
