Kent Emanuel had a quality start and Zach McCambley threw two shutout innings of relief, but Louisville would drop their game on Wednesday night after they couldn’t get much offense going.

As one who has always thought “quality start” is a dumb stat, I’m still surprised when people use it.
Emanuel had a 4.50 ERA for the game. Nothing about that qualifies as a “degree of excellence, or a high standard of value”.
Quality starts help rest your BP during a long season. It’s a more important stat than W or L IMO
I’ve gotta write *something* in the intro and had one game to work with.
I disagree. ERA, WHIP, and a host of other stats can be really drag down numbers from one atrocious start. A quality start, meaning you went 6 IP with allowing 3 runs or less, means you kept your team in the game and didn’t tax the bullpen. That is a valuable start, and how many of those you get show how consistent you can be over time.
I don’t think quality start for one game means much. But if a pitcher has 20 quality starts in a season that is a valuable pitcher even if his ERA is 4.50 or more.
Example Logan Webb has a 4.31 ERA and 17 QS at this point.
Sandy Alcantara has a 3.84 ERA and 21 QS. These two have an impact even on games they are not pitching because they save the bullpen.
Giving up 3 runs over 6 IP (4.50 ERA) qualifies as a Quality Start.
But giving up 4 runs over 9 IP (4.00 ERA) doesn’t qualify for a “quality start”. Even though it’s a lower ERA and more innings.
For my money, that is dumb. But feel free to disagree.
tick…tick…tick…. the minor league season is ticking down and only doug is paying attention
Don’t forget about the AFL.
I’ve warmed to the idea of trading EDLC this offseason.
The Dodgers would be the place to do it, I just don’t know how much they would give up for him.
I would be open to it, but it would have to be a Soto like package. From the Dodgers something like Josue De Paula, Eduardo Quintero, Christian Zazueta, Zach Root, and Cam Leiter. I’m not trading Elly for Mike Sirota, James Tibbs, and Adam Serwinowski
I’d be happy with that return, but I’d probably rather Sirota over Quintero.
I just started to think of the remaining value of EDLC, and if we lose much of the 2027 season. A trade like this would have us geared to 2028.
It’s probably moot, as previously discussed going into the deadline.
This management team and ownership simply do not have the fortitude let alone motivation to do this. For one, it’s a massive admission of failure, and the type of failure that might actually cost Krall his job. So he, among all others in his leadership team likewise invested, don’t have anywhere near the motivation not to mention ability to pull it off. Their motivation is self preservation.
Second, an admission of failure on this level — trading away your generational superstar at a juncture such as this — thus requires a major rebuild. The Castellanis et al won’t tolerate it. And it probably reflects something they are right about. Trading your superstar deflates the entire entity. While the value of the franchise will most certainly continue to grow along with all 29 others, they won’t preside over an even more public collapse of the franchise than we are seeing today. I don’t think they have the psychology or stomach for it. The result is continued mediocrity. My conclusion is that Elly’s here until they have no other choice. See above Castillo, Cueto, Gray, Geno I, Bruce, Frazier, and, especially, Votto.
It’s just plain grim.
Oh, I have no delusions of them making a proactive move from the current position. It’s at least fun to speculate, have to have fun with the Reds somehow.
Are the Reds sticking with Krall for now because they want to see how the CBA breaks down, or because they do plan to sell the team in the offseason?
I’m trying to come up with a way in my head to justify it.
MBS, I am thinking more along the lines of Krall being the lowest bid on the project.
I’m still puzzled why he announced he (they) were staying instead of ownership.
Where’s Phil?
Phil doesn’t have a good track record speaking to the media. Whether they admit it or not, this rebuild is a failure thus far. And this franchise seems more stuck in the cellar than in mediocrity. This is shaping up to be a rough offseason.
Will be an interesting offseason. Curious to see who the Reds push up through the system. Graham and Duno get moved to AAA and what position do they play. Don’t remember if on the radio or TV the other day talking about Duno. If he hits in AAA next year do the Reds promote him to play 1b or DH?
Will the Reds retain Geno for next year?
What to do about KBH? Since Reds have some money coming off the books do the Reds DFA KBH?
Outfield spots – TJ gone? Myers starting in CF next year (think he has done enough to earn it). JJ and Hector the other to starters?
Back up infielders – is Steer expendable? Don’t know enough about Brito but he looks like he is a capable backup.
Well, the Reds are certainly capable of promoting Duno to the ML’s to play a position he has never played before, especially when they already have a 1B who is a leading ROY candidate.
But even the Reds must know a catcher with Duno’s hitting ability and power is vastly more valuable at catcher than at 1B or DH. The question is, will the Reds promote Duno before his defense is ready? If Marte (3B and RF) and Arroyo (2B) are examples, they might. Who doesn’t like a big splash? But C is a completely different animal, and the risks of promoting Duno before he is ML ready to handle the position, including help implement the pitching game, is not a small thing. It’ll be another test of organizational intelligence.
