The Reds have reportedly signed Venezuelan right hander Jonathan Perez to a deal for $825,000 according to Baseball America. If it is true, it sounds like a good guy to add to the system. He has a fastball that can reach 92 MPH at age 16 and the amount of money given to him is a fairly significant chunk of change. Of course, for now, Walt Jocketty is denying the deal. There could be a few reasons he is denying it. First of course is that it isn’t true. I hope that isn’t the case and that it is more along the lines that he hasn’t passed a physical yet, or that the deal is agreed upon, but hasn’t been signed by all parties involved. One other theory I heard was that perhaps the Reds don’t want it to get out just yet because there could be a few draftees out there asking for more money and the Reds have said it wasn’t in their budget and this signing would just verify that not being true. At the end of the day though, I have to imagine that Baseball America got it right and that Walt Jocketty is just playing word games with the media right now. There are videos up of a young RHP named Jonathan Perez from Venezuela on youtube if you search for them. I have to figure it is the same guy, but I can’t be 100% sure either.
RHP Daniel Tuttle was suspended for 50 games after having his second DOT drug testing come back positive. The drug was not a PED. Not good, but I think we all know why he was sent to the AZL Reds complex a month ago now.
Yasmani Grandal has been out for a few days after a muscle strain in his arm flared back up (he missed a few games with it a few weeks ago as well). He is said to be back soon, possibly today.
Kevin Goldstein released his Top 50 prospects on Monday at Baseball Prospectus. Both Devin Mesoraco (11) and Yasmani Grandal (30) both made the list. No other Red was on it.
That is all for now. Talk some trade rumors in the comments.
