4/15 Game Review

Louisville won 5-3. Box Score

  • Kristopher Negron went 1-4 with a double and a run.
  • Denis Phipps went 1-3 with a walk and 2 steals (2).
  • Todd Frazier went 1-4 with an RBI, steal (3) and a run.
  • Neftali Soto went 1-4 with a double, RBI and a run.
  • Danny Dorn went 1-4 with a solo HR (3).
  • Felix Perez went 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI.
  • Corky Miller went 2-3.
  • Brett Tomko allowed a run in 4.1 innings. He had 6 hits allowed and 4 walks with just one strikeout.
  • Scott Carroll threw 1.2 scoreless innings of work with a strikeout.
  • Travis Webb threw a perfect inning of work.
  • JJ Hoover threw a perfect 9th inning with a strikeout for the save.

Game notes

The Bats put up a four spot in the 6th inning to break a 1-1 tie. The bullpen held on to give the Bats the win. Only Corky Miller had more than one hit for the Bats, but it was enough. Scott Carroll kept a perfect ERA through 8.1 innings this season with just 1 walk and 6 strikeouts on the season. I have long wondered if he would be successful out of the bullpen. So far, the results have been good.

Pensacola won 2-1. Box Score

  • Ryan LaMarre went 1-3 with 2 walks.
  • Didi Gregorius went 2-5.
  • Henry Rodriguez went 2-5 with a solo HR (2).
  • Brodie Greene went 2-4.
  • Cody Puckett went 0-2 with 2 walks.
  • PJ Phillips went 0-2 with 2 walks.
  • Miguel Rojas went 1-1 with a run as a pinch hitter.
  • Pedro Villarreal allowed a run in 6 innings with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.
  • Justin Freeman threw 2 perfect innings of relief.
  • Donnie Joseph struck out the side in the 9th with a walk mixed in.

Game notes

The game was tied heading into the bottom of the 9th at 1-1. Miguel Rojas had a bunt single with one out that was followed by a single by Didi Gregorius, an infield single by Henry Rodriguez to load the bases and then Joel Guzman plated the run by drawing the bases loaded walk. Pedro Villarreal with another strong start, now with a 1.53 ERA on the season. Joel Guzman is really beginning to intrigue me. A former Top 5 prospect in all of baseball, his downfall was partly due to very poor plate discipline in the past. He walked twice in the game and now has 7 walks in 10 games with just 3 strikeouts. Perhaps something worth keeping an eye on. Justin Freeman only needed 17 pitches (and 14 strikes) to get through his 2 innings of relief that resulted in 5 ground outs and a strikeout.

  • Brian Pearl threw 2 shutout innings of relief with a strikeout.

Game notes

The game was decided by a walk off home run in the 8th off of Michael Griffin (minor league double headers only last 7 innings each). Billy Hamilton is now hitting .382 on the season while showing good plate discipline. Good sign. Devin Lohman combined with Hamilton for to reach base all 8 times the two went to the plate, but they were only able to put up one run in the game as only Donald Lutz had a hit for the rest of the lineup.
