In one of the absolutely most bizarre series of events I have seen in baseball the Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed Jake Elmore from the Reds. I don’t even understand how that is possible unless the team outrighted him, he cleared waivers, became a free agent, signed with the Reds, was put back on the 40-man roster and then waived again and this time was claimed. Unless the official transactions listings were wrong from Major League Baseball, I simply don’t have a clue what is going on with this.
In a strange series of moves the Cincinnati Reds outrighted Jake Elmore from the 40-man roster earlier this week and he became a free agent. The next day he was re-signed by the Reds and added back to the 40-man roster. I don’t have an explanation, or even a theory on why it was done, but I’d love it if someone could explain it to me because I can’t come up with a reason why it would happen that way. Why not just keep him on the roster?
With the addition of Elmore, the Reds 40-man roster now sits at 39 players. With the team needing to add players to protect them from the Rule 5 draft and explore free agent signings, I’d look for more roster moves to be made over the next three weeks to clear some space up.
Here is what Elmore did with the Reds organization after being picked up on waivers from Oakland:
