The semi-finals of the playoffs in the Mexican Winter League got underway on Sunday night. The Charros de Jalisco took the first game of the series, 6-1. First baseman Marquez Smith played a big role in the win. Smith had three hits and two runs batted in. He also stole a base.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the game was tied at 1-1 before Jalisco rallied for five runs to put the game out of reach. The last two runs of the inning came when Smith singled to right field with the bases loaded to really put the game away.
Marquez Smith is leading the league in hitting for the playoffs, hitting .438. His .526 on-base percentage is second and his .875 slugging easily leads the league, as does his 1.401 OPS.
Felix Perez continues to have a solid run in Venezuela. He too is in the playoffs and helped his team to another win in their round robin tournament, going 2-5 with a triple on Sunday night. Perez is hitting .323/.389/.613 in eight games and is currently third in the playoffs in slugging percentage and sixth in OPS.
