Vladimir Gutierrez is set to sign with the Cincinnati Reds according to Jorge Ebro.

The Reds have been scouting Vladimir Gutierrez for a while now. It was initially reported that they were at a workout for him earlier this spring and then another one later in the spring. The Cuban right hander was weighing his options on whether to sign this year or perhaps wait until the next signing period. He recently held another showcase and the Reds were one of several teams in attendance with a few higher ranking personnel there to watch, which I wrote about just a few days ago.

Cincinnati scouts must have been quite impressed as the now 20-year-old has agreed to sign a deal with them for $4.75M. Since the team has already gone over their spending limit it will actually cost the team $9.5M, with the 100% tax on the bonus being paid to Major League Baseball.

Vladimir Gutierrez last pitched in Cuba as an 18-year-old in 2014. He also pitched there as a 17-year-old. He was quite successful in both seasons as he worked out of the bullpen. Here’s a look at his stats between the two years.

Year Age ERA IP H BB K
2013 17 3.90 67.0 65 40 44
2014 18 2.45 51.1 37 19 49
Totals 3.27 118.1 102 59 93

He made big strides in his second season in the league, particularly when it came to his walk rate. He also boosted his strikeout rate. The league as a whole has a walk rate of 10% and a strikeout rate of just 11%. As an 18-year-old, Gutierrez had a 9% walk rate and a strikeout rate of 23.4%, more than twice the league average.

When it comes to scouting his stuff, he’s showing plus velocity, touching 97 MPH and sitting in the 93-95 MPH range. He also shows an above-average to plus curveball. His change up lacks behind the other two pitches but could be an average pitch in the future.

While he’s been used as a reliever in Cuba, many believe he’s a future starter thanks to his 3-pitch mix, age and size. He’s currently listed at 6′ 3″ and 175 lbs.
