The Cincinnati Reds have released right handed pitcher Ian Kahaloa. The 19-year-old just completed a 50-game suspension for a “drug of abuse”. Minor League Baseball announced the suspension in April, but his suspension didn’t begin until the Billings Mustangs season began. That suspension is now up and he’s been released by the organization.

Back in March I noted that he was not in spring training with the club and shortly after that some incriminating videos surfaced online that showed what appeared to be him with different paraphernalia and drugs. The suspension came out less than two weeks later. Well, there’s an intervention for heroin addiction.

It’s a tough story to hear, as Ian Kahaloa clearly had talent on the mound. Last season as an 18-year-old he dominated in Billings, posting a 2.82 ERA in 44.2 innings with 13 walks and 42 strikeouts. Unfortunately, he also had things working against him off of the field and they caught up to him. Hopefully he’ll be able to get his life back on track.
