The Cincinnati Reds officially added shortstop Freddy Galvis to the 25-man roster this afternoon. In turn they have optioned infielder/outfielder Brian O’Grady to Triple-A Louisville.

For Brian O’Grady he heads back to join Louisville after spending nearly a week in the Major Leagues. He picked up his first career hit – a single against the Chicago Cubs on August 10th, in his first big league call up. Who knows how long he’ll remain in Triple-A with the Bats, but it will give him a chance to catch up to Aristides Aquino for the Louisville Bats franchise record in home runs (he trails him by 1). O’Grady is hitting .277/.351/.562 for Louisville in 100 games played this season with 27 doubles, a triple, and 27 home runs.

I wrote a lot about Freddy Galvis yesterday and what I hope it does and doesn’t mean when it comes to playing time and how it’s handed out moving forward. We’re all going to have to wait and see on this one. He’s not in the lineup tonight. Jose Iglesias is getting the start at shortstop and Josh VanMeter is at second base.

Dietrich will be coming back from the IL soon, likely later this week. Two plusses: O’Grady gets regular playing time and consistent at bats; if O’Grady is recalled on 1 September he won’t burn an option year as his option time will be only 19 days, 1 day short of counting.

I don’t think the Reds are too worried about option years with O’Grady, given his age, but you’re right on him. I feel like Dietrich has been out long enough that he’ll probably get a few at-bats on rehab somewhere before coming back to the Reds.

Was a 40 man roster move needed today or was there an open spot?

      • Doug Gray

Open spot due to Hernandez being DFA’d then released.

When Dietrich comes back, whom will he replace? I think everyone on the current roster is more productive than Dietrich has been in the second half of the season.

Heck since June 1. I would keep him on IL until September. He is currently bringing nothing to the table,

What seedy information does Jose Peraza have on the Reds front office that they keep him on the roster? I have to know! lol

He knows he can play 3 INF spots and 3 OF positions. So do Reds.
