The Cincinnati Reds selected infielder Rece Hinds with their 2nd round pick int he 2019 Major League Baseball draft. The 18-year-old was taken out of IMG Academy and assigned to the Greeneville Reds in the Appalachian League.

For Rece Hinds the season didn’t go as expected. He played in just three games, going 0-8 with two walks and three strikeouts. The last game he played in was on June 22nd. Later that week I was in town for several days to watch the Greeneville Reds play. Hinds did participate in some of the pre-game activities by the final two days that I was there, including taking some batting practice.

That was two months ago. He never did get back into a game. At the time the injury didn’t seem serious, and when I did ask around I was told by several sources that it wasn’t serious but there wasn’t a definitive timetable for a return, either. Still, the impression that I got was more so that the timetable wasn’t going to be nearly as long as it turned out to be.

Earlier today, buried in a story on MiLB.com about Tyler Callihan (which you should read), Bob Sutton notes that Rece Hinds was shut down for the season a few weeks ago due to the quad injury “when his rehab from a quad injury stalled”.

Aristides Aquino named International League ROY

The International League named their season award winners and postseason All-Star team on Tuesday afternoon. Aristides Aquino took home some hardware. He was named as the leagues Rookie of the Year. The right fielder was also named to the postseason All-Star team. He was the only Louisville Bat to make the team.

While he only played in 78 games with Louisville this season, he put a hurting on the league’s pitching. The 25-year-old hit .299/.356/.636 in his 323 plate appearances. As you’re probably well aware of by now, he showed off his massive power this season. The Punisher as he’s well known as hit 13 doubles, a triple, and he had 28 home runs for the Bats. His 28 home runs are currently tied for 4th best in the league. Everyone else in the top five has played at least 94 games this season.

So Aquino has 40 HR already this season. Nice!

I hope they aren’t just assuming Hinds only has a quad injury and don’t look into whether it’s something more. I say that out of concern for the young man’s health.

Have to wonder why he would have continued to rehab with the team if it wasn’t being successful. The facilities in Arizona or Cincinnati would have been much more sophisticated. This all seems a little odd.
