The Southern League, where the Cincinnati Reds Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts participate, named their league award winnings and their postseason All-Star team. There was only one Lookout who took home any honors. First baseman Ibandel Isabel was named to the postseason All-Star team for his efforts on the season.
Isabel has played in just 91 games this season and is currently on the injured list. He last played three weeks ago and has been injured ever since. Despite missing some time this season he’s leading the league in home runs with 26 (second place is at 21). He’s also second in the league with 69 runs batted in. His overall line on the season is .243/.307/.518. The slugging percentage of .518 leads the league and is he is only one of two players over the .490 slugging mark among qualified hitters this season.
Prior to joining the Reds organization, Ibandel Isabel was also a postseason All-Star in 2017 while playing in the California League. He was traded to Cincinnati early the following season. He also made the Florida State League postseason All-Star team last year after setting the league record for home runs.
Luis Bolivar to manage in the AFL
This news broke a few days ago, but I held off writing about it on these pages with the hopes that the rosters would be released soon. That hasn’t happened. But whoever is heading out to Arizona to play for the Glendale Desert Dogs will likely have a familiar face as their manager. Luis Bolivar, the manager of the Dayton Dragons has been named as the Desert Dogs manager for the 2019 season. He will also be joined by strength and conditioning coach Justin Bucko, who handles that job with the Dayton Dragons as well.
The Arizona Fall League starts nearly a month earlier than usual this year. The first game of the year will come on September 18th and the season will run through October 26th when the championship game will be played. The annual Fall Stars Game will take place on Saturday October 12th.
Another interesting tidbit is that this season teams in the Arizona Fall League will play a handful of games against teams in the Mexican Winter League, and those games and stats will count towards the league totals. The Glendale Desert Dogs will face Mexicali on September 24th and September 26th – both at home.
Update: As I literally hit the publish button on this article word came down that the Arizona Fall League rosters were expected to be released today. So I guess there will be another article coming on that later today, and the comment about the rosters not yet being released look a little bit silly.
