With the Cincinnati Reds hitting the road for a 2-game set in Cleveland to take on the Indians starting tonight, and then heading to Milwaukee for three more over the weekend, the team picked their taxi squad players for the trip. Teams are allowed to take up to three players on the road with them as long as one of them is a catcher. In their trip to Detroit they only took one player, catcher Tyler Stephenson. This time around they will be taking two players – José De León and Francisco Peña.
Right-handed pitcher José De León could fill in for someone in either the rotation or the bullpen if a need arises while the team is on the road. It’s tough to say exactly where he’s at in terms of a pitch count since he has been at Prasco Park where there is no media allowed, but he’s been a starter in the past as he was expected to provide some rotation depth.
Catcher Francisco Peña is making this trip instead of Tyler Stephenson. I wouldn’t read much into that right now. There are some benefits that come along with being on the taxi squad, and it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if the organization just rotated a few guys on-and-off of it – alternating road trips, as a way to share in those benefits with it being unlikely that on a given trip someone will be needed from those that are traveling with the team.
Neither player has played in the Major Leagues yet this season, but both have spent parts of several seasons in the bigs. De León is on the 40-man roster, while Peña is not. Minor detail there, but it does mean that if the Reds need to add a catcher on the trip that they may need to make a 40-man move to make it happen.
Reds and Cubs to play a doubleheader makeup
The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds will be playing a doubleheader on August 29th. That’s a Saturday, and in 2020 that also means the games will be 7-inning affairs. It’ll turn into a day/night situation as the first game will begin at 4:10pm ET and about 30 minutes after game one ends the second game will begin. That makes a guesstimated start time for game to around 8:15pm ET.
