The accolades just keep rolling in for players in the Cincinnati Reds farm system this year. This week the honors are going to Graham Ashcraft as he was awarded the Double-A South Pitcher of the Week honors for his start on Wednesday for the Chattanooga Lookouts.
In his Double-A debut, Graham Ashcraft picked up right where he had left off with the Dayton Dragons. Facing off against the Rocket City Trash Pandas the big right-handed starter threw a 9-inning complete game shutout. It was only the third 9-inning game pitched in the minor leagues this season (hat tip to Baseball America for this nugget). In the game Ashcraft allowed just two hits – an infield single that broke up his perfect game to lead off the 7th inning, and a blooper just over the head of the second baseman. The righty walked no one and he struck out eight while throwing 102 pitches.
While that outing earned Graham Ashcraft the Pitcher of the Week award, it’s just a continuation of what he’s been doing all season. The start was his fifth consecutive start in which he didn’t allow an earned run – stretching his streak to 32.0 innings, dating back to May 30th. He’s held hitters to a .133/.179/.143 line in that span while walking just six, giving up just 14 hits, and he’s struck out 38 of the 114 batters he’s faced. In his nine starts this season he’s now 5-1 with a 1.89 ERA between Dayton and Chattanooga with 13 walks and 63 strikeouts in 47.2 innings pitched.
For Ashcraft, this is the second time this year he’s won the Pitcher of the Week Award from Minor League Baseball. He also won it for the week of May 31-June 6 for the High-A Central when he was with Dayton.
