It’s Monday and that means that Minor League Baseball is naming their Players of the Week for each league across the minors and the Cincinnati Reds brought home the award at both their highest and lowest levels this week. In Triple-A it was shortstop Jose Barrero getting the nod for Hitter of the Week for the Triple-A East. Down in the Dominican Summer League it was pitcher Elkyn Chirinos getting the award for Pitcher of the Week.

Jose Barrero had hits in five of the six games for Louisville last week against the Iowa Cubs. In total he hit .458/.519/.833 while scoring six runs, driving in eight, smacking three doubles, walking twice, homering twice, and stealing three bases. Ever since the Futures Game, Jose Barrero has been obliterating the baseball. Including that game he’s now hit .400/.494/.733 over his last 90 plate appearances. He’s hit better in Triple-A than he did in Double-A (.990 OPS to .848 OPS) and now has his line on the season between the two stops up to .309/.386/.520 with 16 doubles, a triple, and  a career best 13 home runs in just 69 games played.

Elkyn Chirinos is repeating his 2021 season with the DSL Reds. He had success, but limited action as an 18-year-old there in 2019 when he posted a 2.84 ERA in 12.2 innings as a reliever. This season he missed out on the first few weeks, but he returned two weeks ago and he has made three starts for the Reds. On July 31st he allowed one hit – a leadoff infield single and abruptly picked the runner off of 1st – over 5.0 shutout innings without a walk and he struck out eight batters.

For the year he’s now thrown 11.0 innings with four hits allowed, five walks, and he’s struck out 16 batters. Chirinos has also held opposing batters to a .114/.262/.114 line in his three starts this season.

With the awards being handed out to Jose Barrero and Elkyn Chirinos this week it gives the Cincinnati Reds organization 11 on the season.
