The Cincinnati Reds have two pitchers who were named the Player of the Week for their respective leagues. Robert Dugger got the nod in the Triple-A International League and Spencer Stockton took home the honors for the Double-A Southern League.

Last week Robert Dugger made one start for Louisville. The right-hander dominated the Columbus Clippers, throwing 6.2 innings while allowing just three hits, walking no one, and striking out four batters without giving up a run. That was enough to earn him the Player of the Week honors on the pitching side of things.

A level lower in the minors it was Spencer Stockton getting the hardware for his performance. It’s been a dominant season for Stockton in 2022, but his last week ended with by far the worst performance of the season when he allowed seven earned runs in 0.2 innings. Those runs literally doubled the number of runs he had allowed on the season.

In his first outing that followed he struck out eight batters in 3.1 shutout innings where he allowed just one hit against Rocket City. Four days later he returned to the mound against the Trash Pandas and threw another 2.2 shutout innings with two walks and two strikeouts. For the week that gave him 6.0 shutout innings where he allowed just three hits, two walks, and 10 strikeouts. Stockton now has a 2.76 ERA in 45.2 innings this season with 16 walks and 49 strikeouts between his time in Dayton and Chattanooga.

There have been six other Reds minor league players to win the award this year for their league:

  • Matt McLain – Southern League Player of the Week – April 11-17
  • Sam Benschoter – Florida State League Pitcher of the Week – May 2-8
  • Joe Boyle – Midwest League Pitcher of the Week – May 23-29
  • Ruben Ibarra – Florida State League Player of the Week – June 6-12
  • Leonardo Balcazar – Arizona Complex League Player of the Week – June 27-July3
  • Elly De La Cruz – Midwest League Player of the Week – July 4-10

Spencer Stockton. Not bad for an undrafted free agent signing in 2019, a year where there were 40 draft rounds …
