Yesterday we detailed new signee Victor Vargas. The 23-year-old will make the start tonight for the Dayton Dragons in his organizational debut. He’s not the only player on the move, though. Cincinnati has called up reliever Yosver Zulueta from Triple-A today. Austin Wynns, who was designated for assignment this past week after also being called back up to the big leagues this past week, cleared waivers and accepted his outright to Louisville. I wrote about Zulueta over at Redleg Nation if you wanted to get a little more information on him and the move.

Injury Updates around the farm system

Carlos Sanchez has not played since May 2nd. The teenage infielder was in Daytona and had been struggling, hitting .171/.308/.184 through his first 22 games. A hamstring injury has kept him off of the field for nearly two months, but he’s expected to take the field tonight out in Arizona where he’ll begin a rehab assignment.

Alfredo Duno was also in Daytona. He hasn’t played in a month after exiting the game following a groundout. His timeline for a return isn’t yet known. Duno suffered a fractured rib and I was told that he’s on a “week to week” situation and they’ve just got to see how everything heals. It is not expected to be a season ending injury.

Jose Acuna missed the start of the season, but returned in mid-May and pitched in two games for the ACL Reds before joining Double-A Chattanooga. He pitched in two games for the Lookouts out of their bullpen, but his last outing was on June 1st and he hasn’t pitched since. Acuna has been dealing with a flexor strain. I was told that the club is trying to get out ahead of the injury and that it’s not expected to be a long term thing.

    Thanks, Doug.

So, Duno and a fractured rib? OK, my curiosity is on full alert. I was watching the game he was injured/pulled and noticed the same as you (Doug), that Duno seemed to slow up running to first base. Did he fracture a rib swinging the bat? Is he that strong? That this is even a possibility in my imagination of imaginations shows how big this kid is.

When a player goes on the season ending injury list does he no longer count against the maximum number of players you can have under minor league contract, similar 60-day and the 40-man. Reds signed Vargas while placing Harmon on season ending IL.

Correct. But unlike the big leagues, there is a limit on the number of guys that can be put on the “season injured list”. I *think* it’s 15 per organization, but don’t quote me on that.

Did we ever hear what Hunter Hollan’s (last years 3rd round pick) injury is? I was really high on him. He pitched through a knee issue last year in college and was put on the 60 day DL in the spring. Is his injury related to his knee or something new. Seems like he is going to miss the whole season.

Phillips is the one I want to know what’s wrong. Just watching him last year vs this year is mindblowing. He favors his arm every throw. Such a blow for the Reds future. I expected him replacing Ashcroft this year.

Nice to know they get the youngsters on the IL train prior to reaching the show. They need experience in how to occupy themselves while their teammates struggle without them.
