In a must win game for the Bakersfield Blaze on Monday night Jeff Gelalich stepped it up as he drove in four runs. The outfielder hit a bases clearing double in the sixth inning and added a solo home run in the eighth to keep the Blaze alive for at least one more day. This follows the game on Sunday where he drove in two runs and reached base three times.
Shortstop Zach Vincej got in on the action as well as he reached base four times in front of Gelalich and scored twice. He also stole a base. In the three game series Vincej is 6-12 with three walks, two RBI and three runs scored.
The Visalia Rawhide pitching staff has been very careful about pitching to Marquez Smith this series. He walked three times on Monday night and two of the walks were intentional. He also added a single. For the series he has now walked seven times and is 4-7 when they have decided to pitch to him.
Wandy Peralta stepped up big time for the Blaze as he tossed 6.0 strong innings where he allowed just two runs. It was his first start since August 29th, so he was well rested and it paid off as the left hander helped keep the season alive.
While Dylan Axelrod got the start for the Reds last night against the Cardinals he was only able to throw seven pitches before exiting the game with an injury. David Holmberg came in to relieve Axelrod and essentially became the starter as he tossed 5.2 shutout innings with two walks and five strikeouts. The 5.2 innings were more than double his previous career high for innings pitched in a game at the big league level. He threw 81 pitches and 46 strikes in the game while generating seven ground outs and just one fly out in the game.
