With the draft deadline looming the Cincinnati Reds were able to add at least one final signing to the fold on Wednesday when they inked 22nd round pick Darren Shred to a contract. Here’s a tweet that his mom originally sent out and that he retweeted.

Shred was ranked in the Top 350 players in the 2015 Draft, but that ranking was based on his abilities behind the plate as a catcher. The Canadian high schooler was drafted by the Reds as a pitcher.

The pre-draft scouting reports on Shred as a pitcher had him sitting in the upper 80’s with his fastball and touching 90 MPH. The right hander also showed off a solid curveball on the mound.

The 17-year-old won’t turn 18 until the middle of October. At 6′ 2″ and 200 lbs he’s already got some good size working for him and there may be a little room for growth there as well.
