The Cincinnati Reds need a starting pitcher to fill out their rotation on Thursday in Colorado and they have decided to go with Sal Romano. Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer was the first to report this that I saw.

The 23-year-old right handed made one spot start for the Reds in mid-April, allowing two earned in 3.0 innings before being replaced on the mound to start the 4th inning. After returning to the minor leagues he would make two more starts, but then hit the disabled list after injuring his shoulder warming up between innings on April 26th.

After spending  five weeks on the disabled list he returned to the mound for the Louisville Bats on June 6th. His first start back went well as he struck out eight batters with two walks in 5.0 shutout innings. He’s battled consistency in the starts since then, including a tough outing on June 17th where he threw 51 pitches in the 1st and only inning he pitched with five walks. He rebounded well from that game, allowing five earned in his next 14.0 innings (3.21 ERA) and walking just two total batters.

For Sal Romano he will get a second chance to make a good impression. His big league debut didn’t quite go as he had planned. While he was throwing hard, averaging 96 MPH on his fastball, he struggled to throw strikes in the game as he walked four batters in 3.0 innings. Over the last two seasons in the minor leagues he’s had a very low walk rate, so the high walk total stood out in his debut. If he pitches more like he has shown himself in the minor leagues expect to see a lot more strikes this time around.
