Tuesday was a big day in winter league baseball as the Puerto Rican League began play. Several Cincinnati Reds players took the field last night in the league, but we’re going to start in the Dominican Republic today and talk about Mariel Bautista.
Licey had a double header scheduled for Tuesday, and in the second game the Tigres put Reds prospect outfielder Mariel Bautista in the lineup for his Dominican Winter League debut. In the 4th inning he came up to the plate with two runners on and took an 84 MPH hanger and put it over the wall in left-center for a 3-run homer.
there is a strong chance you have never heard of Mariel Bautista (23-year-old OF prospect in the Reds system who has never played above A-ball) but he hit his first career LIDOM HR in his first career LIDOM game tonight for @TigresdelLicey and that's pretty damn cool pic.twitter.com/P6yw0Ri0Xc

Personally, I’m a little insulted that the CespedesBBQ crew thinks so many of you hadn’t heard of Mariel Bautista before their tweet. Clearly they all need to hang out here at RedsMinorLeagues.com a bit more often.
In Venezuela it was a big night for Lorenzo Cedrola. Playing for La Guaira, the outfielder went out and picked up four hits on Tuesday night. One of the hits was a double – his first extra-base hit of the year in Venezuela – and he also scored two runs while driving in two others. In his eight games he’s now hitting .345 with a walk.
Those two weren’t the only Cincinnati Reds players to have themselves big nights, though. Down in Puerto Rico it was an Opening Night start for right-handed pitcher José De León. He got the start for Caguas and he put together an interestingly strong start. He racked up eight strikeouts in 4.0 hitless innings. But he also walked four batters, hit another one, and was charged with an unearned run. Both Brian Rey and Wendell Marrero played on Tuesday night as well – both as pinch hitters.
Reds pick up a Competitive Balance Round A pick
On Tuesday evening Major League Baseball handed out the competitive balance picks for the 2021 Major League Baseball draft. Cincinnati, along with Miami, Detroit, Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, and Minnesota all picked up picks in Round A, which follows the 1st round. The Pirates, Orioles, Royals, D-Backs, Rockies, Cleveland, Cardinals, and Padres all picked up a Round B pick that will follow the second round. Cincinnati will also pick up a pick if Trevor Bauer signs with another team before the draft. Where that pick falls will depend on how much he signs for – a contract for more than $50M will get them a pick in Round A, while a contract for less than that will lead to a Round B pick.
